Inside Horror: The Great Debate

Inside Horror – The Panel Show

For the first time, we hosted a debate panel and it was a lot of fun… went by super-quick! With three smart, opinionated and well-informed guests, we could have gone on and on. Drew Daywalt (“Master of the Short Shock”), Tammi Sutton (director of Isle of Dogs), and Matthew Currie Holmes (producer, P5YCH), all talked about found footage films, sequels and remakes, plus the proliferation of so-called DIY filmmaking.

Topics we wanted to cover, but didn’t get to, included:

*How do you think the growing voice of women filmmakers in the genre will change the type of films being made?

* Where is the New Iconic Villain? (No Michael, Freddy or Jasons? Even Jigsaw is a decade old. Victor Crowley & Chromeskull aren’t cultural phenomenon like the others.) So do horror films have less cultural influence now, or are we just out of evil?

* We seem to be moving into an overtly ironic time in films – to the point where movies are hailed as “So bad , they’re good’ (Birdemic, Troll 2, etc.). Are we going to get to the point where people make bad films on purpose?

* Have we seen the last of ‘Torture Porn’?

Since we couldn’t talk about these things with our illustrious panel, please feel free to answer in our comments section.
